The Music Department is situated in the Cedars building. The Departmental staff are Ms A. Jury (TLS) and Mrs R. Lee-Johnson. The Department runs courses through KS3, KS4 (GCSE) and KS5 AS and A2 level. The Department runs The Junior Singers (Year 7 and 8 only), the Upper School Choir (Year 9 upwards) and the School Band (open to all students). These groups play in a number of concerts each year: the Lion Concert, the Spring and Summer concerts. Furthermore the Department also organises a GCSE / A level concert and a Junior House Music and Poetry Competition every year. The Department is also a venue for a special visit by a visiting examiner of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music: students can take their examinations in school in December and May every year.
At KS4 the Department prepares students for the Edexcel board GCSE. Their study involves 4 modules : Structure in Western Classical Music 1600-1899; New Directions in Western Classical Music 1900 to the present day; Popular Music in Context and Rhythms and scales in music from around the World. Students must also give 2 Performances (1 x Solo; 1 x Ensemble) as well as produce a portfolio of 2 compositions. The only examination students must sit is a Listening examination.
AS and A2 music continue with the 3 components of Performing, Listening and Composing. This time, unlike at GCSE, the board OCR examine the Performing component by means of a visiting examiner. At AS students have to play Solo for 5-8 minutes on a first instrument as well as undertake a second option. At A2 however they must give a longer Recital (between 12-15 minutes). For the Composing part students must submit firstly a Techniques portfolio (for AS 6 pieces and undertake a 7th under supervision; for A2 a set of exercises e.g. 8 Bach Chorales) and a Composition/arrangement (AS - Composition or Lead sheet arrangement; A2 Words and Music assignment). As at GCSE the only formal examination is a Listening examination. However at KS5 students must consider some set works and some contextual essays.
