The overall aim of the department is to increase the participation and activity levels of the whole school, through the promotion of physical activity. This is to be done by offering a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs, allowing students and staff to use the facilities during lessons and after school and promoting outside clubs and agencies within the school.
The school has a range of sporting facilities including a large sports hall, swimming pool, floodlit court area, dance studio, fitness suite and gym.
In KS 3 the students will acquire and develop their skills in a range of sports including Hockey, Netball, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance, Tennis, Athletics, Badminton, Volleyball and Rounders. They will be given the chance to select and use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas in different competitive and creative situations.
The students will analyse and evaluate their performance and make decisions on how to improve. They will be encouraged and guided on making choices about having active and healthy lifestyles. This will be done through the opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular clubs including some sports not covered in the curriculum.
In KS 4 the students will select 3 sports to cover in more detail learning how to officiate and coach as well as perform.
Students are able to follow the Edexcel GCSE course involving both practical and theory components.
In KS 5 students are able to complete the Edexcel A level course and the Sports Leaders level 2 award where they plan and deliver PE lessons to local Primary school children.
