The German Department consistently performs well in public examinations. We prepare large numbers of students for the GCSE and AS/A2 examinations and have an impressive percentage of those who go on to study German at university. Part of our success lies in the fact that we place great emphasis on personalised, differentiated learning opportunities.
We use a variety of up-to-date, authentic materials to teach well-planned, engaging lessons.
We offer annual visits to Germany, including a trip to the Rhineland for Year 10 in Term 1 and a KS4 and 5 visit to the Christmas Market in Aachen. In the 6th Form we also offer a trip to Berlin or Munich on alternate years in Term 3 to experience first hand many of the cultural and historical topics that feature in our syllabus. We also offer a week’s work experience in Germany, a trip that is organised and overseen exclusively by the established company Halsbury Travel who specialise in educational visits.
In KS3 and 4 the topics we study include:
- Describing myself and my family and others.
- Leisure activities, food and drink, healthy living, daily routine.
- School, jobs, spending habits and shopping.
- Holidays and tourism, local town and environment, life in Germany.
We aim to enhance the students’ learning by using ICT and a range of media in the classroom. We also organise practical tasks which the students very much enjoy.
The Edexcel course includes the following topics : Relationships, youth concerns, leisure, politics, the EU, healthy living, the environment, technology, the developing world, 20th Century German history.
We also offer a study trip to Berlin or Munich prior to oral exams. Most of our AS and A2 students achieve an A or B grade in their examination.[wpfilebase tag=file id=15 /]
