The Science Club for Year 7 - 9, that takes place on Wednesdays during second break, welcomed a visitor to our session on the 19th of April.
Anjali, a former Kendrick student and now a student of Materials Science at Imperial College, introduced the students to an exciting resource that will help them to plan a mission to the Moon.
I was recently nominated, along with 3 other Year 9 students from Kendrick, to attend a series of Mathematics Masterclasses run by the Royal Institution. We joined Year 9 students from the local area at Holyport College over 5 Saturday morning workshops.
Each week we looked at a different topic of maths: Infinity and Beyond, Stock Market Trading, Surprising Statistics, Magic Squares and Origami.
Finishing just before the end of last term, Chess club students have been taking part in the UK’s biggest Chess Tournament for schools: the Delancey Chess Challenge.
Students from Year 7 – 12 took part, playing 7 rounds of matches on a weekly basis.
On Tuesday 21st March, students in Year 9 had an 'Introduction to Careers' day in the Library whilst having their profiling appointments with their teachers. They visited various sections of the Careers Library, getting to know the resources available in school for their use. They had the time to investigate these resources which could be of significance to them when thinking about their future potential careers.

On Wednesday 22nd of March, the Kendrick Poets’ Society launched its new poetry anthology, centred around the theme of ‘Growth’. This well-established event is now in its third year, and we were delighted with the turnout. Students and staff bought copies of the anthology, sought signatures, and formed a wonderful audience for the readings by a few of our poets.
On Friday 24 March 2023, the library was honoured to host the presentation of the Holocaust Memorial Day Poetry Competition prizes.
Ordinary people were involved in all aspects of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution of other groups, and in subsequent genocides. The theme this year, highlighted the ordinary people who let genocide happen, the ordinary people who actively perpetrated genocide, and the ordinary people who were persecuted.
On Friday 24th March, Kendrick School hosted the Air Ambulance Charity Concert in collaboration with students from Reading School. Since 2012, students of the two schools have come together every year to make music and raise money for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance (TVAA). The concert is completely student-led, from the lighting to the programmes and, of course, all the music.
This event was started in 2011 after the TVAA saved the life of Toby Darrington, a student at Reading School. The following year, his sister organised a concert to raise money and show gratitude for this incredible organisation, and this tradition has continued by the two schools.
On Friday 3rd March two teams of four Year 10 students took part in the Year 10 Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) Maths Feast at Langley Grammar School, an exciting and challenging competition that tests mathematical, team - working and communication skills.
Each year the format of the competition changes slightly, so the rounds stay interesting, and this year was no exception! We competed in 4 separate rounds which needed a variety of tactics and also put our problem-solving skills to the test.
Last weekend, Kendrick Students (Esha, Krittika, Nikitha, Aniya, and Shriyam) took part in the UK Space Design Competition (UKSDC), a multidisciplinary space-themed competition designed to simulate life in the space industry.
A team of 5 Kendrick Students, and students from other schools came together to form ‘Kepler Automation’ (an engineering company).
Once again at Kendrick School we decided to celebrate World Book Day for an entire week, rather than confining it to one day…after all, reading is such a wonderful thing to celebrate!
Towards the end of last year, the Kendrick House Captains launched the House Photography competition that was open to all year groups. Entries were invited to the themes of:
Photos were judged anonymously by Mrs Shaw, who has written a 'judge's comment' on the winning photos, indicating why she picked them.
On Wednesday 1st March, a group of students in Year 9, 10 and 11 joined students from other Reading schools at one of the events of the Write On Festival at The Abbey School. This festival celebrated a variety of different non-fiction writing genres, and the event we attended focussed on journalism, and it included a Q and A panel with local journalists, broadcasters and documentary makers as well as a number of smaller workshops.
