  • Team Maths Challenge National Finals

On Monday 16th June, our school's team of Riya, Navami, Ananya and Simiao participated in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge National Final, a follow-on from the Regional Team Maths Challenge that took place earlier this year. Accompanied by Mr Stride and Mrs White, we took part in this challenge, which was held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London.  We were competing against teams from 64 schools across the UK, each of which had been the winners or runner-ups of their regionals.

There were five different rounds to the challenge - the Group Circus, the Crossnumber, the Shuttle Round, the Relay Round and the Poster round.

    1. The Group Circus had a set of eight problems.
    2. The Crossnumber Round was a mathematical crossword where the team was split into pairs, one to solve the down clues and the other worked with the across clues, in order to solve the Crossnumber.
    3. The Shuttle Round consisted of four sets of interdependent problems where the answers to one problem were dependent on the answers to previous problems.
    4. The Relay Round was a rapid-fire round where speed and accuracy were put to the test.
    5. Lastly, the Poster Round was centred around the topic of “geometry in plants”, which we had researched prior to the competition.  We also had to answer three questions that we were given to us on the day.

Before the announcement of the results, we were addressed by Simon Singh, author of Fermat’s Last Theorem, who encouraged us to be curious and follow our passion for Mathematics.  Overall, we placed 2nd in the Poster Round and were each awarded a glass medal, a reward for the hard work we had put into it.

The event was full of excitement, and the problems we encountered allowed us to hone our team working skills as we progressed through the challenges together. We achieved 9th place out of 64 schools from across the UK, which is an excellent result.

We are very grateful for the opportunity to participate in these competitions, and although quite challenging, it allowed us to expand our knowledge of Mathematics and improve our problem-solving skills.

Above all, we would like to thank Mr Stride, Mrs White and the Maths department for their constant support and encouragement.
