Year 12 Physicists: ‘Heroines of Science’

h1On 8th March, International Women’s Day, a group of Year 12 Physicists from Space Soc attended a Women in Science event held at the University of Reading. The Heroines of Science event was organised to celebrate the achievements of women in all areas of science.

For this event, we entered five posters detailing the lives of various women in science such as Katherine Howell, Mae Jemison, Chien-Shiung Wu and Sofia Kovalevskaya.

Alongside four other schools, we also made a presentation on a chosen Heroine of Science.

We chose Vera Rubin for her monumental contributions to astronomy. The link to the presentation is here and includes our video of Vera Rubin’s life, and Lauren Alie’s rap on Dark Matter:

The event was both a poster and presentation competition which we won for both elements – the presentation on Vera Rubin and poster made by Serene Thomas on Nettie Stevens.

This event was very interesting as we were able to learn so much about the achievements of various women in different fields of science. Especially since it was International Women’s Day, for us as young female scientists, it was also extremely inspirational.
