Classics Trip to University of Reading

Our Head of Classics, Mr Duncan, along with Mrs Nicholson, took a group of 20 enthusiastic Year 8 students to a 'Classics For All Day' at Reading University.  Hosted by the Classics department of Reading University, in partnership with 'Classics for All', it is part of the university's wider outreach program to local schools and aims to promote the teaching of classics in schools.  The event offers interactive sessions, object handling, and talks to provide a taste of university life and spark interest in Classics.

It was a wonderfully exciting day with a variety of sessions, including Sanskrit & Ancient Board Games, Roman Maths, Gemstones In the Ancient World and some fun interactive games.  As part of the 'Ancient Schoolroom Experience', students could participate in a historically accurate reconstruction of an ancient Roman schoolroom, interacting with teachers and using ancient writing materials.

We also listened to a talk from Professor Andrew Sillett from Oxford University, who heads up the local Classics for All network.

We were treated to a lovely lunch and a tour of the campus, giving students a fantastic insight into life at the University.
