Year 12 A-Level Biology Trip to Longleat

On Thursday 16th October, Year 12 biologists embarked on an exciting journey to Longleat Safari Park. As part of our Biology specification, we gained a deeper insight into the importance of maintaining biodiversity and the role of conservation. First and foremost, we attended a conference, where the amazing staff of Longleat explained the role of biodiversity within the safari park, as well as why it is crucial to save endangered species.
Through these sessions, we learnt about interesting ways to restore populations. For example, the Northern White Rhino Project, which consisted of the potential use of IVF, as they were near extinction. We also learnt about the challenges faced by scientists as they tried to adapt the technique of IVF for animals.

Furthermore, a key element of the sessions was based on the giant Magnolia snail. These snails are being saved through ex-situ conservation (e.g. zoos and seed banks) as they are at a higher risk of extinction due to their habitat. Although the sound of snails may not sound appealing to many, we learnt about the importance of these species as they actually help fertilise forest habitat, allowing us to maintain global biodiversity.
During the second session, we learnt about the importance of involving local communities
in conservation efforts, especially in countries with economic instability. More sustainable choices throughout Longleat Park were shown to us. For example, plastic-free tea bags that were sourced from solar-powered tea factories, encouraging individuals to play their part in maintaining biodiversity.
Afterwards, we went on a bus tour across the safari park, having a great time learning about the striking flamingos, the fearless lionesses and the adorable red pandas. Our Year 12 Biology Prefects kept us engaged throughout, educating students with fun facts, such as the Latin names of the animals and how Longleat Park assists these animals through restoration projects.
Overall, we had an amazing experience on this trip, from learning about how animal records are kept at Longleat to how the northern White rhinos are being saved from extinction.
