Year 12 Debate in French

On Thursday 2nd July, we were given the opportunity to meet up with the Reading School students who also do French A-level to take part in a debate-style discussion.

We were split into 4 small teams to discuss and prepare our ideas, before going head-to-head with the others in quick-fire 5-minute rounds. We debated different pertinent topics. For example, the significance of AI and whether volunteering should be obligatory for school students. In my debate, the proposition argued for the benefits brought about by voluntary work, such as the important life skills you develop as well as a more well-rounded view of the world. Our team combated this by arguing for the possible negative psychological associations created by making this work mandatory, thus risking a reduction of the benefits gained from the experience.

It was a really fun experience, and I found everyone to be open to everyone's ideas and very friendly. We were also able to practise our French in a fun and amusing environment. Despite our team not winning, this was definitely an enjoyable event overall, and I met lots of lovely people and improved my French!
