The Simon Powell Poetry Prize 2020

We are delighted to announce that one of our Year 11 students, Abi  has been a selected as a winner in the national poetry completion, The Simon Powell Poetry Prize.  Her winning poem is attached.

Amongst other prizes, Abi has won a place in an online poetry workshop with renowned poet Daljit Nagra, who was one of the judges.  He described Abi’s poem as ‘a wonderfully funny and lively piece of bewilderment in the face of lockdown. Several fresh images create the feeling of suppressed mayhem'.   Abi will also recite her poem at the next Poetry Live! event, which Year 11 students will hopefully attend next year.

Abi’s reaction to being a prize-winner was ‘I'm very surprised, but also excited to have this opportunity to improve my writing. Most of all I'm looking forward to the virtual workshop with Daljit Nagra!’  We are sure that readers will agree that there is no surprise this is a prize winning poem.  As well as being funny, it is original, insightful and very moving.

Well done, Abi!
